2022年度ABB翻訳ボランティア活動まとめ

This year's ABB翻訳ボランティア activities are finished. Two groups of students translated subtitles for videos on two SDGs-based themes. In the first half of the year, they translated videos on SDG 3: Good Health and Well Being. In the second half, they translated videos on SDG 4: Quality Education.

In both halves of the year, there were three main meetings: an introductory meeting to make teams and choose which of ten videos they would translate; a second meeting to check that the first translations were finished and to choose which of the videos they would check or improve the translations of; and a third meeting to check all translations and checking were complete. As such, on of the skills the participants developed was their ability to work in small groups in order to meet deadlines. Of course, the translation activities also helped develop their English skills, and they developed students' background knowledge on the topic in the videos and improved their Japanese skills as they carefully chose how to express the ideas in the videos in subtitle format.

In the second half of the year, a fourth meeting was added so that the students could get feedback from and ask questions to a staff member from Asuka Academy, the organization that runs the translation volunteer activities. This meeting was very interesting and students who continue translation activities gained useful advice from it. Next year, we hope to incorporate such an opportunity into both halves of the year.
