1学期まとめ
This academic year's debate activities have been very active so far.
In April, the explanation meeting was held and over 50 students attended. From those students, 36 decided to join and 16 high school second graders, who had participated last year, returned, so the year began with 52 debate members.
In the first semester, we held five meetings. This was one more than last year in order to increase the amount of practice. The schedule was as follows:
5/24 (Fri)
A practice session to introduce the debater roles and basic debate techniques such as the AREA organization pattern (stating your Assertion, Reason(s) for your assertion, Examples that support your reasons, and restating your Assertion).
5/27 (Mon)
A practice session focusing on rebutting and points of information (POIs) that are used to interrupt the other team's speaker to ask questions or make rebuts.
A first full debate judged by online judges.
6/10 (Mon)
A practice session to look at the final speakers' summarizing roles.
6/17 (Mon)
A practice session on advanced debating techniques, especially, using logic, emotion, authority and timing to enhance arguments.
A second full debate judged by online judges.
7/8 (Mon)
A practice session on advanced debating techniques, especially, rebutting using your own team's main ideas in order to develop the clash point of the debate and show your side's superiority.
A third full debate judged by online judges.
Overall, the extended practice element to the first semester and the active participation of the experienced members in helping the beginners led to a very effective and meaningful practices and we are looking forward to the activities in the second semester, which will begin on 9/2 with a final review of skills practiced followed by a fourth debate. After that, students will do two debates each time we meet.
夏合宿報告
On 8/2 and 8/3, seven of our debate members participated in the PDA Online Summer Camp. The camp consists of three practice rounds, three selection rounds, a keynote speech, and semi-final matches and final matches for various divisions. Our teams achieved Hibari's best result ever at this event. Our A team won two practice matches and two selection matches, and also received several best debater and POI awards. Our B team won all their practice matches, two selection matches, and also received some individual awards.
Well done!
