2023年度第２回即興型英語ディベート
On Monday June 12th from 15:45 to 17:45, we held the second debate meeting of the year.
We started with conversations about the news because, as explained last time, it is important for debaters to know what is going on in the world around them because debate topics are often created from current news stories. Then, as planned for this year, the first hour was spend on explanation and practice. We focused on using the 15 minutes planning time, especially to do these things:
1. Defining the motion, which is done by the government team to create and interesting and fair debate.
2. Brainstorming and sharing ideas, which is done to understand main points connected to the debate topic, generate points from which your team can chose their main two points, and prepare you for points the other team might make.
3. Selecting your main points, especially thinking about potential clash points in order to pick the strongest points.
4. Planning your speech using notes, for example, using keywords, symbols and abbreviations. This skill is important because planning time is limited, so it is almost impossible to write a three-minute speech in full sentences in the time available.
After those things, we split into two rooms and started the day's debate. The topic was Parental leave should be made mandatory for both parents (両親の育児休暇取得を義務付けるべきである). Students did a very good job and it was especially noticable that many speakers reached or when over the time limit for their speeches! Perhaps in the next practice we will have to talk about time management...
