PDA即興型英語ディベート
2026年度第3回即興型英語ディベート
On May 27th (Wed), students participated in the third English debate meeting this year.
First the students reviewed and practiced confident speech delivery by introducing themselves to new teams. Then, they learned about and practice using points of information (POI). POI are used to deepen the debate. Members can ask questions or make comments during one of the other team's speeches. They can check that they have understood the other team, get more explanation from the other team, or attack the other team. To practice this, everyone played a speaking game where they must interrupt the other player with the question "Why?" as many times as possible.
Next, students studied how to rebut the other team's ideas. They were taught a general flow for rebuttals:
- Restate the other team's idea.
- State that it is not good.
- Give a reason why it is not good.
- Explain this with a reason and example.
- Restate that the other team's idea is not good.
After this, the students discussed the best way to rebut various opinions given by the teacher.
Finally, students did a practice debate without online judges. The topic was Volunteer work in schools should be mandatory. (学校でのボランティア活動を義務化すべきである。) The students did an excellent job. Especially, we were very happy with their time management as, after just two debates, almost all speakers used the appropriate amount of time and seem to have become used to giving longer speeches. Also, there was a lot of great eye contact and use of body language. Finally, there were lots of POIs!
Well done, everyone!
