PDA即興型英語ディベート
2026年度第6回即興型英語ディベート
On Monday August 31st, the students took part in the sixth debate meeting of the year, which was the first in Term 2.
First, they briefly reviewed the debate skills from Term 1.
Next, they practiced approaching the motion and making powerful arguments based on their own strengths. For example, when analyzing the motion, it is a good idea to try and link the topic to some wider, bigger issues, e.g. economics, morality, and so on. When doing this, students should be careful to pick issues that they know about and can argue about confidently. Also, the students were introduced to the debate approaches of ethos, pathos and logos. In other words, focusing on building trust, provoking an emotional response or using logic and data. While all of these can be used, again students were encouraged to focus on the approach they feel most comfortable with.
After practicing, the students had a debate with online judges. The motion was Fossil-fuel-powered vehicles should be banned. (化石燃料を使う交通機関は禁止すべきである。) Students debated actively and there were various POIs, so it seems people haven't gotten rusty during the long break.
Well done, everyone!
