PDAオンライン夏合宿2021
On the 6th and 7th of August, six of our PDA members participated in the two-day online summer training camp. Three of our high school first years entered in the beginners' division and three of our second years entered in the regular division.
8月6日と7日、本校のPDAメンバーが2日間のオンラインサマーキャンプに参加しました。高1生は初心者の部、高2生は経験者の部で対戦しました。
On the first day, they participated in three practice rounds. In the first two, they were debaters and in the final one they were judges. Then, they competed in the first qualifying round. The topics for the debates on the first day were: 初日のトピックは以下のとおりです。
Practice Round 1: Cosmetic sugery should be banned.「美容整形は禁止すべきである」
Practice Round 2: It is better to be single for life than to have a family.「家庭をもつより独身の方がよい」
Practice Round 3: China should abolish its restriction on the number of births.
「中国は産児制限を廃止すべきである」
Qualifying Round 1: Vaccination against COVID-19 should become mandatory.
「ワクチン接種は義務化すべきである」
Although they lost all their matches, the students did their best, got valuable experience, and received useful feedback from the judges. 結果は芳しくありませんでしたが、生徒たちはベストを尽くし、有益なフィードバックを得て、非常によい経験をしました。
On the second day, they participated in the final two qualifying rounds. Unfortunately, they were unable to progress to the semi finals, but they watched those and the final. The debate topics on the second day were: 2日目、予選に挑んだ生徒たちは残念ながら準決勝には進めませんでしたが、決勝戦まで見学をしました。
2日目のトピックは、以下のとおりです。
Qualifying Round 2: Male employees should be forced to take parental leave.
「男性社員の育児休暇取得を強制すべきである」
Qualifying Round 3: School rules regarding appearances should be abolished.
「外見に関する校則は廃止すべきである。」
Semi Finals/Beginners' Division Final: The Tokyo Olympics should have been cancelled.
「東京オリンピックは中止すべきであった」
Final: Teleworking makes people happy. 「テレワークは人々を幸せにする」
Also, on the second day after the first debate, they watched the keynote lecture given by Associate Professor Mariko Tatsumi from Osaka Prefectural University. Professor Tatsumi spoke about diversity and gender roles, which connected to the debate they had just finished. And, before lunch, there was a chance to socialize using on online meeting environment where they could create avatars and interact with other students from the camp.
2日目は、大阪府立大学の巽教授による講演がありました。テーマは直前のディベートに関連する、「多様性と性差による役割」でした。また昼食前には、他校生との交流を行いました。
Over the two days, our students worked very hard and also had many chances to talk with fellow English debaters from all over the country. Afterwards, they discussed what they had learned and gained from this and how they can use that in future debating. Firstly, they realized the high level of English debaters within Japan. This did two things: it made them think about what they need to improve, for example, their English vocabulary and organization when speaking and arguing. Also, it has helped them to raise their goals. They want to improve to try to reach the level of some of the teams that they debated against. Secondly, they felt they have become more used to speaking and debate, which will surely help them when school debate activities begin again after the summer vacation.
2日間、全国のディベート仲間と英語で話し、今後のディベートに何を活かすべきかを学んだことと思います。全国のレベルの高さを知り、何を改善すべきかを考えさせられました。そしてこの経験は、それぞれがより高い目標を持つことにつながったことと思います。次回の校内でのディベートに、今回の参加者たちがより高い目的意識を持って参加してくれることを期待しています。
