One of the easiest and most engaging ways to learn English is to practice using new target language in practical and hands-on ways. This allows the students to see the purpose of the lesson clearly in a way that has real meaning for the learners.
In the 1st and 2nd grade class we have been busy earning colors and shapes. With those goals in mind, the teachers prepared a set of tangrams for each pair of students. The students then looked at the shape of the object on the TV monitor and one by one they used their tangrams to build the object with their partners. The sets included several similar shapes but of varied sizes. The students naturally inquired to the teacher with classroom English “How do you say（小さい） in English?” Thus, their request became more precise and their confidence grew.
Within 2 lessons, the students asked their partners for pieces of the puzzle with ease and raced against each other to complete the puzzles as many times as time allowed. The most satisfying sight for the teachers was to see classmates helping each other, not just telling the answer, when their fellow student needed help. That is the true essence of a global learner.
We will continue to find ways to engage the students as they become confident communicators.

　英語の時間に新しい表現を学ぶための最も早い方法は、実用的、実践的に練習することです。これは、子どもたちが授業の目的をはっきりと理解することにもつながります。
　１年生、２年生では、今、「色と形」の勉強をしています。これらを学習するために、ペアで１組のタングラムを用意しました。

　子どもたちは、隣の席の子に、”I need a triangle.”などと言い、必要な形を１つずつもらいながら、モニターに映った形と同じものを作っていきます。タングラムのセットには同じ形の大きさ違いも含まれています。子どもたちが習ったことを使って自分で尋ねるように、あえて、大きさの違う三角形はどう言うのか教えませんでした。すると、子どもたちの中から自然と、習ったClassroom Englishを使って、”How do you say 小さい　in English?”　と尋ねる子がいました。このようなプロセスが、習ったことをより正確に使うことにつながり、また、子どもたちの自信にもつながると考えています。

　このような授業を２時間すると、子どもたちは、タングラムのパズルを完成させるために必要な表現を簡単に言えるようになり、今度は、時間内にどれだけたくさんのパズルを作ることができるかを競い合うようになりました。我々が何よりも嬉しかったのが、子どもたちが、ただ答えを言うだけでなく、助け合って取り組んでいたことです。友だちが言えなくて困っていると、ペアの友だちが助けていました。これこそ、グローバル教育の神髄なのです。

　これからも、子どもたちが自信を持ってコミュニケーションを図っていけるよう、授業づくりに努めていきたいと思います。
