Junior High Second Grade Special EIP Lessons: Designing and Making Original Board Games

Day 1

First, the teachers told the students to use English for the whole three days.  Next, they were told about various kinds of tabletop games, for example, board games, card games, etc.  Then, they talked about what kind of games they like and what games they have played.

Next, they were shown some games and told to talk and make groups with other students who wanted to play the same.  After this, they sat in three groups and started to play different games while the teachers helped explain the rules and encouraged them to use English.  Some of the students could also help explain some of the games because they played some of them in Term 1s special lessons.

The rest of the afternoon was spent playing several games and having a good time!  Both teachers were very impressed with how much English the students could use.  Also, the teachers were very happy to see the students warm up and interact with each other enthusiastically.

Before Day 1 finished, the teachers told the students they would design and make games in Day 2, so they should start thinking about what kind of game they want to make, for example, a team one or a fighting one.

Day 2

Students got into their groups and discussed what kind of game to make.  Then, they planned and made the game using art materials, pieces from the games available, or MetaMoji.  Teachers supported and encouraged their English discussions, as well as printing and laminating finished work.

The second day was perhaps the most impressive because the students had to use English during this creation process.  This kind of task isnt one they have tried in normal EIP lessons, but it also doesnt require special language, just a strong mindset.  The teachers were especially impressed because of how well students did this stage suggesting and discussing ideas, allocating tasks and so on.  They really showed why they were chosen to take part in the special lessons!

Day 3

On the final day, after finishing making their games, students were put into new groups so that at least one member of each game-creating group was in each new group.  Then, with those new members help the groups tried each of the original games.  Again, the teachers were delighted with the amount and quality of the English used.

Overall, the three days were a great success.  As explained, the students did a great job if using English, but they also displayed great teamwork, creativity, effort, and so on.  Although it was only three afternoons, each group produced and a good quality original board game.  Well done!  We hope the students continue to use and develop the various skills practiced on this special EIP course.

Finally, if you are interested in the games that were made, they will be displayed on the junior high second grade floor on top of the bookshelves in the third semester.  Please take a look!
